# Icelandic DNA: ancient origins of a population founded in a single century

What are the ancient origins of Icelandic DNA? Two founder populations, Norse from the Norwegian coast and Gaelic from Ireland and Scotland, who settled an empty island between about AD 870 and 930, with a measured sex bias toward Norse fathers and Gaelic mothers, followed by eleven centuries of drift in a small population that shifted its ancestry toward the Norse side. Iceland is the one Nordic country whose founding can be dated to a human lifetime. The island had no permanent population until the Norse settlement began about AD 870, and by about 930 the land was claimed. Every Icelandic genome since descends from the people of those sixty years and from a small number of later arrivals. That makes Iceland the youngest branch of the [Scandinavian story](/blog/scandinavian-dna-ancient-origins) and the [Viking Age's](/blog/viking-dna-origins-migrations) cleanest natural experiment: a population whose founders can be sequenced, whose mixing can be measured, and whose drift can be watched across eleven centuries. ## A settlement with a date

The medieval Book of Settlements names hundreds of founding households and the coasts they took, and it describes an island claimed from Norway's western fjords with a detour through the Norse colonies of the Hebrides, Orkney and Ireland. Archaeology agrees on the timing: a tephra layer from an eruption dated to about AD 871 lies under the earliest farms and over none. The founding population is thought to have numbered in the low tens of thousands by the time settlement closed, and the island's population stayed in that range, occasionally falling far below it, for the next nine hundred years.

That combination, a small founding population, an exact starting date, an isolated island and a written record of descent, is what makes Iceland's genetics unusually readable. The ancient DNA, when it arrived in 2018, could be checked against a story that had never been in doubt on its broad outline, only in its proportions.

## Two founder populations, read from settlement-era bones

The settlement-era study sequenced 27 ancient Icelanders, most of them from burials of the first two centuries after the landnám, and compared them with modern Norwegians, Irish, Scots and Icelanders. The founders were a mixture of two populations: Norse ancestry, matching the [Norwegian](/blog/norwegian-dna-ancient-origins) coast, and Gaelic ancestry, matching [Ireland](/blog/irish-dna-ancient-origins) and [Scotland](/blog/scottish-dna-ancient-origins). Estimated across the settlement-era genomes, the Norse share was about 57 percent, and individual settlers ranged from nearly pure Norse to nearly pure Gaelic, with many mixed already in the first generation.

That mixing had begun before Iceland. The Viking-world genomes show Norwegian-like ancestry in Viking-Age burials across the Northern Isles, the Hebrides, the Isle of Man and Ireland, and ancestry from the British Isles flowing back into Norway. The households that sailed to Iceland from the Hebrides and Dublin were often mixed households already. Iceland's founding population was a sample of the western Viking diaspora, not of Norway alone.

## Norse fathers, Gaelic mothers: the sex bias

The uniparental record measured what the sagas hint at. A Y-chromosome study of modern Icelanders against Norwegian, Scottish and Irish samples estimated that 20 to 25 percent of Iceland's founding males had Gaelic ancestry and the rest were Scandinavian. The mitochondrial record, read the same year, pointed the other way: Icelandic [maternal lineages](/blog/maternal-haplogroup-explained) show a strong contribution from the British Isles, larger than the paternal one, so a substantial share of the founding mothers came from Gaelic populations while most of the founding fathers came from Norway.

The sagas describe the mechanism without apology: Norse men took Gaelic wives, concubines and slaves from the raiding and trading range of the Irish Sea and the Hebrides. The genomes record the outcome at population scale. None of this is a statement about any individual Icelander's descent; it is the average of thousands of households.

## Eleven centuries of drift, and why Icelanders today look more Norse

The settlement-era study made a second finding that is less intuitive. Modern Icelanders are estimated at about 70 percent Norse ancestry, well above the settlers' 57 percent. The authors point to genetic drift in a small population and, plausibly, to lower reproductive success among people of Gaelic ancestry, a large share of whom arrived unfree and at the bottom of the new society. Over generations, the lineages of the Norse landholding families contributed more descendants.

Drift did more than tilt the Norse share. The modern population has moved away from both founder populations: on a PCA, settlement-era Icelanders sit between Norway and the British Isles, while living Icelanders sit off to one side, shifted by eleven centuries at small size. The plague of the early fifteenth century, the smallpox epidemic of 1707 that killed about a quarter of the population, and the Laki eruption and famine of 1783 to 1784 each cut the population sharply and each left a mark in the genome. ## A genealogy as a check

Iceland is the only country whose population geneticists can look up the answer. The genealogical database assembled from church records, censuses and the medieval sources reaches back toward the settlement for much of the modern population, and it allows the ancient DNA to be read against recorded descent. When the settlement-era study identified a burial whose genome matched a lineage in the records, the match was a test of the method that no other country can run. It also allows mutation rates, recombination maps and the inheritance of disease variants to be measured across real pedigrees rather than inferred, which is why Icelandic data underpins so much of human genetics beyond Iceland.

## Reading an Icelandic genome with qpAdm

The deep-era model for an Icelandic kit is the northern European standard, a forager source, an Anatolian-derived farmer source and a steppe source, and it fits because both founder populations carry the same three layers in similar proportions. The interesting model is the proximal one: a two-source fit with a Norwegian-related source and a Gaelic-related source, which is the settlement itself written as a hypothesis.

Two cautions shape that model. The two sources are close kin, so the weights carry wide standard errors and can [trade against each other](/blog/g25-source-selection-overfitting); the population-scale answer is well established, but an individual fit should be read with [its error bars](/blog/how-to-read-qpadm-p-value-z-score-standard-error). And modern Icelanders are a poor source for anyone, themselves included, because drift has moved them off the founder positions. A formal test that uses Norwegian and Irish or Scottish references, and asks whether the model [passes at all](/blog/why-qpadm-models-get-rejected), is more honest than a distance ranking that simply returns "Icelandic" for an Icelandic kit.
