# Norwegian DNA: ancient origins along the Atlantic coast, from fjord foragers to the western diaspora

What are the ancient origins of Norwegian DNA? Coastal foragers who arrived from the northeast as well as the south, a farming transition that came late and finished only with the Corded Ware and Late Neolithic reset after 2800 BC, a stable Nordic Bronze Age profile, and a Viking Age that carried Norwegian ancestry west to the British Isles and Iceland while bringing ancestry from those islands home. Norway is the Atlantic face of Scandinavia, a coastline longer than the distance from Oslo to the equator when its fjords are counted, with a thin strip of farmable land behind it. That geography shaped every chapter of its genetic history: who arrived first and from where, how late farming took hold, where the Viking Age sailed, and why the modern country carries more internal structure than [Denmark](/blog/danish-dna-ancient-origins) or [Sweden](/blog/swedish-dna-ancient-origins). > **The short answer:** Norwegian ancestry stands on Scandinavian hunter-gatherers whose eastern component came around the Arctic coast, took its farmer layer late and thinly, and was reset after 2800 BC by the steppe-derived Corded Ware horizon into the Nordic Bronze Age profile that still dominates. The Viking Age exported Norwegian ancestry to Ireland, Scotland, the Northern Isles and Iceland, and imported ancestry from the British Isles in return. The modern country is structured by its fjords, with old local clusters in the south and west and Sámi-related ancestry in the far north.

## A coast settled from the north as well as the south

The oldest Norwegian genome, from Hummervikholmen near Søgne on the southern coast, is about 9,500 years old, and it carries a surprising amount of eastern hunter-gatherer ancestry for a place so far southwest. The Mesolithic study that sequenced it explained why: Scandinavia was peopled through two doors. Western hunter-gatherers came up from the south as the ice retreated, while people with eastern hunter-gatherer ancestry came around the ice-free Atlantic coast from the northeast, along the very shore that Norway occupies. The two met and mixed, and the resulting Scandinavian hunter-gatherer population carried light pigmentation variants at higher frequency than either source, a sign of adaptation to a high-latitude life that was already old by then.

A later forager from Steigen in Nordland, about 5,800 years old, shows the northern coast still occupied by that mixed population while [farmers](/blog/neolithic-farmer-ancestry-explained) were already established far to the south. ## Farming on the margin, then the Late Neolithic reset

Funnel Beaker farming reached the Oslofjord region around 4000 BC, at the same time as Denmark and southern Sweden, but on the Norwegian coast it did not take. Hunting, fishing and foraging remained the economy for another thousand years and more, with cereal cultivation as an occasional supplement, and the genetic record of the peninsula shows forager ancestry surviving best in the north.

The transition finished in two steps. The Corded Ware and Battle Axe horizon arrived in eastern Norway after 2800 BC with [steppe-derived ancestry](/blog/yamnaya-dna-steppe-origins), and the Late Neolithic around 2400 BC brought a farming package from Jutland, with flint daggers, two-aisled longhouses and a Bell Beaker connection, that spread up the entire western coast within a few generations. By the Bronze Age the Norwegian profile was the standard Nordic recipe, steppe-derived ancestry as the largest component over a farmer minority and a forager trace, and the [Bronze Age transect](/blog/how-to-measure-steppe-ancestry-percentage) reads it as one population with Denmark and Sweden.

## The Nordic Bronze Age and the Iron Age

Norway's Bronze Age is written on rock: the ship carvings of Østfold and Rogaland, the same boat that would define the country three thousand years later. Genetically it is a study in stability. Iron Age Norway produced chieftains' halls, Roman imports and the first runic inscriptions without a measurable change to the gene pool, and the Migration Period, which sent so many others across the North Sea, left Norway's own ancestry where the Bronze Age had put it.

## The Viking Age westward: the British Isles and Iceland

The Viking-world genomes ([our full write-up](/blog/viking-dna-origins-migrations)) measured the direction of Norway's Viking Age. Where Danish routes ran to England and Swedish routes ran east, Norwegian-like ancestry appears in Viking-Age burials in Ireland, on the Isle of Man, in [Scotland](/blog/scottish-dna-ancient-origins) and above all in Orkney and Shetland, where it remains the largest Scandinavian contribution to any modern population in the British Isles. The Northern Isles were a Norwegian earldom for centuries, and their genomes still show it.

Iceland is the clearest case. The settlement-era Icelandic genomes carry Norse ancestry alongside Gaelic ancestry, and the Norse side traces to the western Norwegian coast that the sagas name as the settlers' home. The traffic ran both ways. Viking-Age burials in Norway include individuals with ancestry from the British Isles, and the Scandinavian transect that runs from the Roman Iron Age to the present finds that British-Irish ancestry was widespread in Viking-Age Scandinavia, most of all along the coasts that faced the Atlantic. Some of it persists in modern Norwegian genomes; some of it, like the rest of the Viking-Age inflow, was thinned by later centuries.

## Fjords, isolation and regional structure

The nationwide genomic study of Norway published in 2021 found what the geography predicts: stronger regional structure than in most European countries of comparable size, following the fjords and valleys that made travel by land slow until the twentieth century. Southern and western Norway contain old local clusters, the inland valleys of the east have their own, and the far north stands apart. The structure is texture over a shared base rather than separate origins, but it is texture with history written in it, and it is why a Norwegian genome can show a nearest-population result that points to one county rather than to the country as a whole.

Two additions from historical time show up in the same data. Finnish-speaking Kven communities settled the coast of Troms and Finnmark from the eighteenth century, and Forest Finns settled the eastern woodlands along the Swedish border earlier still. ## The Sámi in the north

The Sámi are the indigenous people of northern Norway, and their genome is a distinct story. Siberian-related ancestry had reached the Kola Peninsula by about 1500 BC, and Iron Age individuals from Levänluhta in Finland carry it in a profile closer to modern Sámi than to modern Finns. Modern Sámi carry that Siberian-related ancestry at the highest level of any European population, on a European base, with distinctive maternal lineages such as [U5b1b](/lab/mt-haplotree/u/u5) and V and paternal [N-M231](/lab/y-haplotree/n/n-m231) lineages. In Norwegian genomes from Finnmark and Troms, Sámi-related ancestry is a measurable component that grades southward along the coast. That is a statement about a cline in a population, not a label for any individual.

## Reading a Norwegian genome with qpAdm

The sharp questions follow the map. Does a kit require a British-Isles source, the Viking Age inflow that Norway's Atlantic coast received more than anywhere else in Scandinavia? Does a northern kit require a Sámi-related or Finnish-related source, a clean [formal contrast](/blog/how-to-choose-qpadm-sources-and-outgroups) because Siberian-related ancestry separates well against the right outgroups? Does a Norwegian source separate from a Swedish or Danish one at all, or do the three [trade weight freely](/blog/g25-source-selection-overfitting)? ## Frequently asked questions

### Are Norwegians descended from Vikings?

Norwegian genomes descend mostly from the Bronze Age population that was already in place two thousand years before the Viking Age, and that population was the Viking-Age population. What the Viking Age changed inside Norway was the arrival of ancestry from the British Isles, not the identity of the Norwegian gene pool.

### Are Norwegians genetically Scandinavian or Celtic?

Scandinavian, with a measurable British-Irish component along the Atlantic coast that dates to the Viking Age. That component is a minority layer over a Nordic Bronze Age base, not a Celtic origin, and it is one of the cleaner hypotheses a formal model can test on a Norwegian kit.

### Do Norwegians have Sámi DNA?

In the far north, measurably, and grading away southward. Elsewhere in Norway the Sámi-related share is small. The Sámi are a distinct population with a Siberian-related layer that most Norwegian genomes do not carry.

### Is Norwegian DNA the same as Swedish or Danish?

Nearly the same at the level of the three prehistoric layers, different in texture. Norway leans Atlantic and carries more internal structure; Sweden leans Baltic; Denmark leans continental. On most PCA views the three overlap, and separating them in a formal model is contrast work rather than eyeballing.
