Kastrouli is a fortified Mycenaean settlement on a hill above the Gulf of Corinth, a few kilometres from Delphi, with cyclopean walls and chamber tombs of the thirteenth century BC. The Mycenaean source is built from nine of its burials, dated between about 1310 and 1250 BC and sequenced by Lazaridis and colleagues in 2022. Their genomes show the profile that defines the Greek mainland from the palace age onward: an Anatolian-farmer foundation from the Aegean Neolithic, a Caucasus- or Iranian-related contribution shared with the Minoans, and a smaller steppe-related component that the Minoans lacked (Lazaridis et al. 2017, 2022).

This is the Bronze Age layer beneath every later Greek population in the catalog: the Phocians of the same hill five centuries later, the Epirotes of Amvrakia and the Corinthians of Tenea all carry it with little change, and present-day Greeks remain among its closest living relatives. In the model it is the oldest of the Greek sources and sits between the Anatolian farmer and steppe sources of the earlier era and the Classical Greek sources that follow it.
