The science we build on
Our Ancient Ancestry report is built on qpAdm, the same formal admixture-modelling framework used by ancient-DNA labs at Harvard, the Max Planck Institute, and the Reich Lab to publish peer-reviewed population-genetics papers. Unlike cluster-based tools that pick a fixed K and force the data to fit, qpAdm tests whether a candidate model is compatible with the data, and reports a p-value alongside every proportion.
That property, being able to reject a model rather than just shrug at it, is what lets us hand back results with calibrated confidence instead of marketing numbers.
What we don't compromise on
- Reproducibility
- Every model is reproducible from the input genotype and published reference panel. We pin dataset versions and document the transformation pipeline.
- Privacy
- We never sell genotype data. Credentials use salted, one-way password hashes and analyses run with strict access controls.
- Honest uncertainty
- Every proportion ships with a standard error and the model's p-value. We do not force a clean-looking number when a model is not credible.
- The full record
- Every published qpAdm model ships its run record, chi-square, degrees of freedom, confidence intervals, every source's panel label and sample count, and every outgroup with its sample count, on screen at every tier.
Who operates Ancestrify
Ancestrify is built and operated by Andi Thomaj, a sole trader registered in Tiranë, Albania (register number M61725001N). He is the data controller for everything processed through this site and the seller of record for every analysis, and he is on LinkedIn. Full registration details are on our legal notice.
Ancestrify is one person, not a consumer testing company: it sells no DNA kits and runs no lab. You bring data you already own, a raw genotype export for Ancient Ancestry or Ancient Matches, or a Global25 coordinate row for Ancestry Map, and every model is tested against published reference panels and reviewed and approved by a person before it reaches your report.

Is Ancestrify a real company?
It is a real, registered business, though not a company: a sole trader, Andi Thomaj, registered in Tirane, Albania, under M61725001N, with a public entry in the Albanian commercial register and a legal notice on the site carrying the registered address.

Who checks the Ancestrify qpAdm models?
Andi Thomaj does. Every qpAdm model published in an Ancient Ancestry report is a full genotype run confirmed and approved by a person before it ships. There is no staff scientist and no claim of one.

Can I get my money back from Ancestrify?
Yes, in full, at any time before the analysis runs. After the report has been delivered the service has been performed and is not refundable except where the law requires it. Refund requests are answered within two business days.

Does Ancestrify compute G25 coordinates?
No, never. Official Global25 coordinates come only from Davidski's independent Eurogenes G25 Requests service. Ancestrify analyses the official row the customer pastes, or obtains that row for them through the 15 EUR Coordinate Concierge with explicit consent.

Is my DNA shared with anyone at Ancestrify?
No. The file is processed only for the customer's own analysis on EU servers in Germany and Finland, is never compared with other customers' files, and can be deleted by the customer at any time together with the whole account.

What does an admixture calculator actually compute?
It finds the mixing proportions of a fixed set of reference profiles that come closest to your genotypes, either by likelihood over K allele-frequency clusters or by Euclidean distance in a coordinate space. It always returns a best combination. It has no test of whether the references are the right ones or whether closest is close enough to mean anything.

What does qpAdm add over a percentage calculator?
A p-value for the whole model, so a proposed mixture can be rejected; a standard error and a Z-score on every weight, so a source the data cannot distinguish from zero is visible; and a published right set of outgroups the model was tested against. It turns an estimate into a claim that can fail and can be checked by someone else.

When is a free calculator the better choice?
When you are exploring, want an instant picture of which references your genome resembles, or simply want to enjoy the result. Calculators are free, fast and fun, and nobody should pay for a formal model before playing with the free version. They become the wrong tool only when the result is meant to be defended.

When is qpAdm not worth paying for?
If your file has very low coverage, because standard errors are set by the file and no search can shrink them; if your question is recent genealogy or living relatives, which qpAdm cannot address; if you expect a single-number answer without a range; or if you want ancestry placed inside a modern country, which a qpAdm model does not do.

How much does a qpAdm analysis cost compared with a calculator?
Calculators are free. Ancient Ancestry, our qpAdm analysis, is a one-time payment from 29.99 EUR (Base) to 59.99 EUR (Perfect), and every tier gets the same report. Every tier is held to the same house bar, p at least 0.05 with every source at |Z| at least 3 and standard error at most 0.10, the report says per era whether it is met, and every published model is reviewed and approved by a person.
