Where to upload your raw DNA data in 2026, and what you get back

A raw DNA file is worth more than the report it came with: your testing company read your genome once and gave you one answer. Other sites take raw files too, and I run this one, so read this as the case for uploading here: what each report returns, what costs nothing and what happens to your file. DNA Traits#

DNA Traits reads your file for published trait research and shows what each study links to your markers, from how you taste bitter foods to whether you digest milk as an adult. It is free, once per account, which makes it the easiest place to start.

Ancient Ancestry#

Ancient Ancestry models your genome as a mix of ancestral peoples, era by era, using qpAdm. Our analyst searches for a model that holds, a person reviews and approves it, and the report publishes the p-value, every source’s standard error and z-score and the full right set, so you can check the result or argue with it. It starts at €29.99.

Ancient Matches#

Ancient Matches scans your file against the ancient genomes in the panel and lists the individual people you share stretches of DNA with, with the evidence shown on every match. One report costs €29.99.

Ancestry Map#

Ancestry Map places you among the world’s peoples from the Bronze Age to today, using Global25 coordinates and a calculator built for you. It reads a coordinate row instead of the raw file, and an official row can only come from Davidski’s Global25 service. So you upload your raw file with the Coordinate Concierge (+€15) and, with your consent, we obtain the row for you; the coordinates guide has the detail. Ancestry Map itself is €29.99.

1. Download your raw file

   Every major testing company offers an export, and the table below has the route for each. Keep the file as the company delivered it, zipped or not: a copy re-saved from a spreadsheet can lose its header.

2. Check it for free

   The Raw DNA File Check reads the file and reports the company, the chip, how many SNPs it holds and which reports can read it. It needs a free account, and nothing is kept. Anything our order flow would refuse on file grounds shows up here first.

3. Choose a report and attach the file

   Start with DNA Traits, or order whichever report answers your question, and upload the file when you order. A file already on your account can be reused without uploading it again.

4. Read your report

   A person reviews every Ancient Ancestry model and every Ancestry Map calculator before the report opens. You can follow an order from your dashboard, and we email you when the report is ready. Reports open on the web and in Ancestrify for iPhone and iPad.

Exports from tellmeGen are accepted too. A whole-genome VCF up to 1 GB works for Ancient Ancestry and Ancient Matches through a €10 add-on, as the whole-genome guide explains. The Coordinate Concierge takes the standard exports only, up to 50 MB.

DNA Traits is free once per account. Everything in the Lab that reads a raw file is free too, with a free account: the file check, the Y-DNA Clade Finder and the mtDNA finder, which return your paternal and maternal haplogroups from 23andMe, AncestryDNA and MyHeritage raw data and discard the file after the run.

If you already hold a Global25 row, the free G25 tools need no upload at all, and G25 Admix is a private free report, once per account, that reads the row instead of a file.

A raw file identifies you and your relatives for as long as it exists, so before you upload it anywhere, ask where it is kept, who can delete it and what it gets compared with. Here are our answers.

We keep files in EU storage and analyse them on servers in Germany and Finland, under GDPR. You can delete a file from your account yourself, and we hold one back only while work in progress still needs it: a report being prepared, a pending checkout or a Workbench kit. Your file is compared with published reference genomes and never with other customers, because we keep no matching database, which also means there is no relative finder here. And it leaves us only with your consent: the Coordinate Concierge asks at checkout, in its own box that is never pre-ticked, before it sends your file to the Global25 service.

Where can I upload my raw DNA for free?#

On Ancestrify, DNA Traits is free once per account, and the file check and the Y-DNA and mtDNA finders are free with a free account. The other reports are one-time payments with no subscription.

Is it safe to upload raw DNA data?#

It is as safe as the site’s hosting, deletion policy and matching model make it. Prefer a site that states where the file lives, lets you delete it yourself and does not compare you with other customers. Ancestrify does all three, as described above. Keep your own copy offline, and never upload someone else’s file without their consent.

Which site is best for ancient ancestry?#

Look for a formal model that can be wrong, with the p-value, standard errors and full right set published and a person checking it. That is what Ancient Ancestry, our qpAdm analysis, publishes, from €29.99. The questions worth asking of any test are on the ancient DNA test page.

Can I upload 23andMe data to AncestryDNA?#

No. AncestryDNA’s help centre states that DNA data from other websites cannot be uploaded to Ancestry. A 23andMe or AncestryDNA file does upload to Ancestrify, and which chip you tested on covers what each company’s file can support.
