Estonia is the place where the ancient-DNA record and a language family meet most precisely. Estonians speak a Finnic language of the Uralic family, and for a century the question was whether that language came with people from the east or was adopted by a local population. The answer, from a run of Estonian-led studies between 2017 and 2020, is both: a small eastern migration in the first millennium BC brought a distinctive Siberian-related ancestry and the paternal lineages that still dominate, onto a population that was, and remains, mostly Baltic.
The short answer: Estonian ancestry is a Baltic base with an eastern layer. Hunter-gatherers of the Comb Ceramic world held the country without farmer admixture until about 2900 BC; the Corded Ware horizon then brought steppe-related and farmer ancestry together, mostly through men; and in the late Bronze and Iron Age a Siberian-related component arrived with the N lineages, the signal that ties Estonians to Finns and to Uralic speakers further east. Autosomally Estonians remain closest to Latvians and Lithuanians; the eastern component is what a formal model needs to add to fit them.
Comb Ceramic foragers#
The hunter-gatherers of post-glacial Estonia were part of the same world as those of Latvia and Lithuania, sampled at Zvejnieki across the border and at Estonian sites of the Narva and Comb Ceramic traditions. Jones and colleagues showed in 2017 that the Baltic Neolithic, pottery included, happened without any Neolithic farmer ancestry, and the Comb Ceramic genomes in particular lean toward Eastern hunter-gatherers, with an affinity toward the populations of the forest zone to the east. That eastern lean is old, older than the Finnic language, and it is not the Siberian-related component that arrives later; the two are distinguishable in a formal model and are easy to confuse in a calculator.
Corded Ware and the start of farming#
Saag and colleagues' 2017 study gave the country its first ancient genomes with a clear result: farming in Estonia began with the Corded Ware horizon, and the people who brought it carried steppe-related ancestry from the Yamnaya world alongside central European farmer ancestry. The arrival was sex-biased. Steppe-related ancestry entered the Estonian gene pool mostly through men, the paternal lineages switched to R1a branches of the Corded Ware expansion, and maternal lineages showed more continuity with the local foragers. As in Lithuania and Latvia, the forager share then rose again through the Bronze Age as surviving hunter-gatherer communities were absorbed, which is why the Estonian Bronze Age profile, and the modern one, is unusually rich in hunter-gatherer ancestry.
The eastern component: Siberian ancestry and the N lineages#
The layer that makes Estonia different arrived last. Saag and colleagues, in 2019, compared Estonian Bronze Age and Iron Age genomes and found a Siberian-related ancestry component that the Corded Ware and Bronze Age individuals lacked and the Iron Age individuals carried, appearing in the late Bronze Age and spreading through the Iron Age tarand-grave population. It arrived together with Y-haplogroup N lineages, which are absent from the Estonian Corded Ware men and are today the most common paternal lineages in the country. Lamnidis and colleagues had traced the same component in 2018 to its earliest northern European appearance at Bolshoy Oleni Ostrov on the Kola Peninsula, around 1500 BC, and followed it through Fennoscandia, where it reaches its highest modern levels among the Saami and is substantial in Finns. Estonians received it at a lower level, along the southern edge of that spread. In autosomal terms the component is modest, a minority layer over the Corded Ware-derived base; in paternal terms it is dominant, the familiar pattern of a small migration that succeeded socially.
Finnic language, Finns and Latvians#
The Finnic branch of Uralic came to the Baltic from the east, and the Siberian-related component is the genetic trace most consistent with its arrival: the same ancestry appears, at varying levels, in almost every Uralic-speaking population from the Baltic to western Siberia. That does not make the component a Uralic marker in any simple sense. Hungarians speak a Uralic language with almost none of it, Latvians carry a little of it without a Uralic language, and Estonians carry less than Finns while speaking a closely related one. The reading the data support is that a relatively small group brought both the language and the ancestry into the eastern Baltic during the first millennium BC and that language and genes then spread unevenly. A language boundary is not a population boundary, here as in the Pyrenees, and a model should test the eastern source rather than assume it.
On a European PCA Estonians fall between the Baltic and Finnish clusters, closer to Latvians than to Finns. Mittnik and colleagues' Baltic Sea survey and Kushniarevich and colleagues' Balto-Slavic synthesis both place them with Latvians and Lithuanians on the forager-rich, steppe-rich Corded Ware base, and the Siberian-related layer pulls them a short distance toward Finland. Finns differ by carrying more of that component and by a strong founder effect of their own; Latvians differ by carrying less of it and, along the Gulf of Riga, by absorbing the Finnic-speaking Livonians. Estonians are the Baltic population with the eastern layer, and every comparison reduces to how much of it a model needs.
Fine structure inside Estonia#
Pankratov and colleagues' 2020 study of the Estonian Biobank resolved structure inside a country of a million and a half people down to historic counties. The western and central core is homogeneous; the northeast around Narva and Lake Peipus is distinct, with Russian and Finnish contact through the modern period; the southeast, Voru and Setomaa, is distinct again, with its own dialect and long contact across the Russian border. The pattern matches the historical map, with parish endogamy preserving differences that the last century of movement has only begun to level. For a kit with roots in one of those regions, the era-scoped results will show it.
Why a qpAdm model needs an eastern source#
A Baltic-only model, Corded Ware-derived Bronze Age Baltic sources with a hunter-gatherer source, fits Lithuanians well and Estonians poorly, and the reason is the Siberian-related layer. Adding an eastern source, an Iron Age Fennoscandian or Siberian-related reference, is what lets the model pass, and the weight it takes is the measurement that separates Estonians from their southern neighbours. This is the clearest example in Europe of a rejected model being informative: the failure without the eastern source is the finding, and the p-value with it is the answer.
Reading your own results#
- G25 distances: modern era led by Estonian, Latvian and Finnish averages; Iron Age eras by Estonian tarand-grave samples; Bronze Age eras by Baltic Late Bronze Age samples. Read the cluster, not the winner.
- Admixture fits: deep-era panels should return a high forager share, a high steppe-related share, a low farmer share and a small but non-zero Siberian-related weight. A fit with no eastern source will push that weight into the forager component.
