The eastern Baltic is the corner of Europe where the usual sequence ran late and then stopped. Farmers who reached the Rhine by 5500 BC did not reach the Nemunas for another two and a half thousand years, and when change did come it came once, with the Corded Ware horizon, and was never overwritten. Lithuanian and Latvian genomes are the closest thing the continent has to a Bronze Age population still in place, and the ancient-DNA record of the region is short because there is not much to record.
The short answer: Lithuanian and Latvian ancestry rests on the same three layers as the rest of northern Europe, in unusual proportions. Hunter-gatherers persisted here without farmer admixture until about 2900 BC; the Corded Ware horizon then brought farmer and steppe-related ancestry together in one migration; the forager share rose again through the Bronze Age; and after that the region absorbed almost nothing, not the Siberian-related component that reached Estonia and Finland, and little of the medieval movements around it. The result is the highest hunter-gatherer share in modern Europe on a Corded Ware base, with N1a and R1a as the two dominant paternal lineages.
Hunter-gatherers who kept their world#
The foragers of the post-glacial Baltic, sampled at the great Zvejnieki cemetery in Latvia and at Lithuanian sites such as Donkalnis, Spiginas and Kretuonas, were a mixture of Western and Eastern hunter-gatherer ancestry that shifted eastward over time. Jones and colleagues showed in 2017 that when these communities took up pottery, the Narva and Comb Ceramic traditions of the fifth and fourth millennia BC, they did so without any Neolithic farmer ancestry at all. In the rest of Europe the word Neolithic means the arrival of Anatolian-derived farmers; in the Baltic it means pots in the hands of the same foragers, for roughly two thousand years. No other region held the farmer frontier that long.
Corded Ware brings farmers and steppe together#
Around 2900 BC the Corded Ware horizon crossed the Baltic region, and Mittnik and colleagues' 2018 survey of the Baltic Sea shows what it carried. The Corded Ware people who arrived were already a mixture of steppe-related ancestry, from the Yamnaya horizon that Haak and colleagues had traced across northern Europe in 2015, and central European farmer ancestry taken on along the way. For the eastern Baltic this was the first outside ancestry since the end of the Ice Age, and it delivered the farmer and steppe layers in a single event. The same arrival in Estonia was measured by Saag and colleagues in 2017 as sex-biased, with steppe ancestry entering mostly through men, and the Baltic evidence matches: the paternal lineages switch to R1a branches of the Corded Ware expansion while maternal lineages show more continuity with the foragers.
The Bronze Age resurgence#
What happened next is the Baltic's distinctive move. Across the Late Neolithic and Bronze Age the hunter-gatherer share in the sampled genomes rose again, as surviving forager communities were absorbed into the Corded Ware-descended population. By the Late Bronze Age, at sites such as Kivutkalns on the Daugava in Latvia, the profile was close to that of modern Balts, and Mittnik and colleagues found that present-day Lithuanians and Latvians carry the highest hunter-gatherer ancestry of any population in Europe, with the steppe-related share also among the highest and the farmer share correspondingly low. That combination, forager-rich and steppe-rich, is the signature of the eastern Baltic and the reason a Lithuanian result looks different from a German or Polish one even though the ingredients are the same.
Iron Age Balts, the least-changed Corded Ware descendants#
The Iron Age added one lineage and little else. Y-haplogroup N1a, of eastern origin, reached the Baltic during the first millennium BC alongside the Siberian-related autosomal component that Lamnidis and colleagues traced through Fennoscandia in 2018. Estonians and Finns took on that component; Lithuanians, further from the route, took almost none, and the N1a lineage spread among them by drift and local success rather than by a large migration. The Baltic-speaking tribes the written sources name, Aukstaitians, Samogitians, Curonians, Semigallians, Latgalians and the Prussians who were later absorbed, are the Iron Age population in place. Kushniarevich and colleagues' 2015 synthesis found Lithuanians and Latvians autosomally closest to Estonians and to the northern Slavs around them, with regional structure following geography more than language family, which is what a population that stayed put and married its neighbours should look like. The medieval Grand Duchy of Lithuania extended political reach far to the south and east without moving the Lithuanian gene pool measurably, and the Slavic expansion that reshaped Poland and the Balkans passed around the Baltic core rather than through it.
Latvia#
Latvia shares every layer of this story and differs at the edges. The Latvian gene pool sits between Lithuanian and Estonian on any PCA, a little further north and east, reflecting the Finnic-speaking Livonians who held the coast of the Gulf of Riga into the modern period and centuries of contact across the Estonian border. The N1a share among Latvian men is as high as among Lithuanians, and the Siberian-related autosomal component is slightly more visible than in Lithuania while remaining far below Estonian levels. Zvejnieki and Kivutkalns are both Latvian sites, so the ancient record of the Baltic is, in practice, more Latvian than Lithuanian, and the Bronze Age population it documents is ancestral to both. Latgale in the east leans toward neighbouring Russian and Belarusian profiles; Kurzeme in the west toward Lithuania. The differences are texture on a shared base.
Reading your own results#
- G25 distances: modern era led by Lithuanian and Latvian averages, then Belarusian, Estonian and Polish, and the rank order among these is where the two Baltic nations part company. Bronze Age eras are led by Baltic Late Bronze Age samples, with unusually short distances because the population has moved so little.
- Admixture fits: deep-era panels should return the highest forager share in Europe over a strong steppe component and a low farmer share; a panel that gives a Lithuanian kit a central European farmer level is misfitting. A Siberian-related source should take little weight for Lithuanians, slightly more for Latvians.

The productive tests are whether a Siberian-related source improves the model, which separates Baltic from Finnic ancestry, and whether a Slavic-related source is needed at all, each with a p-value and error bars.

Are Lithuanians and Latvians genetically the same?#

Are Lithuanians Slavic?#
Genetically they are the closest non-Slavic population to the northern Slavs, because Balts and Slavs share the same Corded Ware-derived base and have been neighbours for three thousand years. Linguistically Baltic is a sister branch, not a Slavic one, and the gene pools stayed distinct enough to tell apart.
Why do Lithuanians have so much hunter-gatherer DNA?#
Because the farmer frontier stopped at the Baltic for two thousand years, and after the Corded Ware arrival the surviving forager communities were absorbed rather than replaced, pushing the share back up through the Bronze Age. Nothing since has diluted it.
