Sardinia is the island every ancient-DNA paper about Europe eventually mentions. When the first Neolithic genomes from the mainland were sequenced, the modern population they resembled most was not in Anatolia or the Balkans but here, and the reason turned out to be simple: the migration that reshaped every other European gene pool in the third millennium BC largely missed the island. The Sardinian genome is a Neolithic profile that kept going, with later Mediterranean history written on its edges.
The short answer: Sardinian ancestry is Early European Farmer at its highest surviving level. Anatolian-derived farmers settled the island by the sixth millennium BC, the Nuragic Bronze Age population is continuous with them and carries little or no steppe-related ancestry, and the Phoenician, Punic, Roman and medieval centuries added eastern Mediterranean and North African-related input concentrated in the coastal towns. The mountainous interior, Ogliastra above all, stayed closest to the Nuragic profile, and that continuity is why Sardinians anchor the farmer component in nearly every calculator.
The first farmers#
Neolithic farmers reached Sardinia early, as part of the maritime Cardial expansion that carried Anatolian-derived people along the northern Mediterranean coasts. Marcus and colleagues' 2020 study, the first to sample the island across its whole prehistory, showed that Middle Neolithic Sardinians of the fifth and fourth millennia BC were already genetically the population that persists to the present: a farmer profile with a modest absorbed hunter-gatherer fraction, closely related to the contemporary farmers of Iberia and southern France, and remarkably stable across the following Ozieri and Copper Age horizons. The island's obsidian from Monte Arci moved across the western Mediterranean in these centuries, so the isolation was never total; it was demographic, a population large enough to absorb visitors without being changed by them.
Beaker pots without steppe, and the Nuragic Bronze Age#
The Bell Beaker style reached Sardinia as it reached most of western Europe, but Olalde and colleagues' 2018 survey found that the Sardinian Beaker individuals carried no steppe-related ancestry. The pottery had travelled without the people who carried it elsewhere. That absence continued into the Bronze Age. The Nuragic civilisation, the builders of the several thousand stone towers that still stand across the island, was genetically continuous with the Neolithic population, and Fernandes and colleagues' 2020 comparison of the western Mediterranean islands showed how unusual that was: the Balearic Islands had steppe ancestry by about 2400 BC and Sicily by the Middle Bronze Age, while Nuragic Sardinia showed little or none. Whatever the Nuragic people traded with Mycenaean Greece and Cyprus, and the bronze record says they traded a great deal, the population itself stayed Neolithic in origin.
Phoenicians, Carthage and Rome on the coasts#
The change comes with the Iron Age. Phoenician and Punic settlement from the ninth century BC founded Tharros, Sulcis, Nora and Karalis on the coasts, Carthage governed the island for three centuries, and Rome held it for seven. The ancient genomes of these periods, sampled by both Marcus and Fernandes and their colleagues, are the first on the island to carry eastern Mediterranean and North African-related ancestry, and they carry it unevenly: the coastal and urban burials show it clearly, the interior much less. Sardinia in the Roman period looks like the pattern seen across the Mediterranean, a mobile coastal population circulating between ports, laid over a countryside that continued the older profile. Present-day Sardinians carry a measurable share of this later ancestry, more than the Nuragic genomes and less than mainland Italians, which is why the modern island is close to its Bronze Age population without being identical to it.
The isolated interior and modern structure#
Chiang and colleagues' 2018 study of thousands of Sardinian genomes resolved structure inside the island that few European regions of its size can match. The mountainous Ogliastra district on the east coast behaves as a genetic isolate, with elevated drift, long shared haplotypes and the strongest Neolithic farmer affinity anywhere in Europe. The Gennargentu highlands around it are similar; the Campidano plain and the coastal towns carry more of the later Mediterranean layers. Paternal lineages tell the same story in a single marker: the I2a branch I-M26 reaches its world maximum in Sardinia, a founder effect from the island's early population rather than an indication of shared ancestry with any mainland group. The interior is also where the medieval Sardinian language kept its most conservative forms, a case where the linguistic and the genetic maps line up.
Why Sardinians are the Early European Farmer reference#
When Lazaridis and colleagues in 2014 sequenced early farmers from Germany and compared them with modern populations, Sardinians were the closest match, and the result has been repeated with every Neolithic genome since. That is not because Sardinians are unusually Neolithic in their history; every European population descends from the same farmers. It is because Sardinians kept that ancestry nearly undiluted while the mainland took on steppe-related ancestry. Modern-era admixture calculators therefore use the Sardinian average to stand in for the farmer component, and a mainland Italian or Spanish result that shows a Sardinian share is reporting Neolithic ancestry, not Sardinian ancestors. In an ancient-source model the anchor is the Neolithic genomes themselves, and Sardinians become a target like any other.
Reading your own results#
- G25 distances: modern era led by Sardinian regional averages, then a gap before Italian, Iberian and Basque populations. The gap is the drift and the missing steppe ancestry, and it is why nearest-population rankings for Sardinian kits are unusually stable.
- Admixture fits: deep-era panels model a Sardinian profile as farmer with a small forager fraction and a steppe-related share near the bottom of the European range. Later-era panels distinguish the interior from the coast by how much eastern Mediterranean and North African weight the fit needs; a coastal kit will take some, an Ogliastra kit very little.

Because Sardinians are the modern population that kept the Early European Farmer profile with the least dilution. A Sardinian component in a mainland result means Neolithic farmer ancestry, which every European carries, not descent from Sardinia.
